2022 programme

Introduction- 4th March- 5-7pm
This introductory session is a chance for everybody to get to know each other and learn in more details about the programme, what it offers and what is expected of participants.

Uncovering narrative structures – 2nd April- 11am – 6pm
This session will use storytelling as a methodology to reveal and play with narrative constructs, focusing on ideas around identity, citizenship, and migration of the human and non-human. Through a series of activities we aim to uncover how narrative structures  shape collective and individual imaginaries, and  consider how through the act of storytelling more nuanced and inclusive  realities can be created.

Infrastructure- 7th May- 11am – 6pm
This session will focus on the infrastructural conditions that underpin the cultural life of our towns and cities, and these spaces where experimentation and production takes place, often out of view and awareness of those not directly involved in backstage cultural activities. We will question what it means to be a ‘cultural institution’, and expand the notion of who gets to be a ‘cultural producer’. We will consider the role culture currently plays in the narratives around urban regeneration, and who gets to define what culture is, who gets to make the decisions, as well as who is left out of the decision making processes.

Sonic Cities- 4th June- 11am – 6pm
Building on an interest in the  connections between music and architecture present within our research since Theatrum Mundi’s inception, this session will focus on articulating how research and design processes that shape cities can incorporate techniques, concepts, and values from sonic practices.

Embodying Otherness- 2nd July- 11am – 6pm
This session will use choreography as a tool to approach displacement not as something that is forced upon and endured by individuals and social groups  but as a necessary act for living. We will question how we can challenge codes embedded in urban design that limit our right to be and move in the city, and strive to attune to constant changes within our surroundings. We will look at the ways we can embody otherness.

Cohort session- 16th July- 11am- 6pm
This session is designed for the group to reflect on what they have learned during the programme and prepare the planning of a summer school they will have to curate, promote and document through a zine.
