We at Theatrum Mundi stand in solidarity with the movement to eradicate the discrimination and violence that black people experience in cities and beyond. We have heard loud and clear the voices of Black Lives Matter and have understood that in order to truly be in support of this struggle, our actions need to go further and deeper than a one-off gesture. This struggle did not start last week, and it will not end this week – but now is the time to make a commitment to the changes it is calling for.

The first step for us had to be to come together as a team to acknowledge our shortcomings, at an organisational level, in addressing the injustices embedded in the urban environment, but also in the professions of urbanism. Then, to agree collectively to make space for a process of self-interrogation and learning, with our own different experiences as a team being the starting place. Only from this process can a real understanding emerge of the actions we need to take as an organisation.

In the spirit of solidarity in the coming week we will be amplifying the work that many others have already done to compile lists of learning resources and organisations needing support as this fight continues. However we understand that only structural change can be the basis of true organisational solidarity, and the real work for us will go well beyond this moment.
