TM leads Scoring the City at Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstädt

Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt have announced a call for participants for the week-long Theatrum Mundi workshop they are hosting next year, 21st-24th of July 2020. This workshop will explore the relationship between approaches to notation in music and architectural design. Throughout the week we will create a collection of scores for urban sites in Darmstadt.

Starting with provocations based on the approaches developed throughout the Scoring the City project so far, applicants to the workshop will have the opportunity to work with invited architects and urbanists including Richard Sennett, through group discussions, site walks, performances, improvisations, and design charrettes. Guest tutors Jennifer Walshe and David Helbich will join for certain sessions to offer specific methods and feedback. By the end of the week, participants will create a score for a chosen site in Darmstadt that blurs the lines between musical and architectural ‘design’, which we will aim to collect together as a quick-fire publication produced on site.

Composers interested in participating are invited to submit one completed composition, composed for a real or hypothetical spatialised performance, using non-standard notation of any kind, for consideration. Applicants are requested to e-mail ONE SINGLE PDF file (LASTNAME_Firstname_Scoring_the_City_2020.pdf) by 15th December 2019 to: scoringthecity@darmstaedter-ferienkurse.de. For further information, and to see the full call for participants, see here.
