‘The State of Things’ began in 2017 as a creative-research project in Funchal, Madeira Island, publicly presented as an audiovisual installation. In 2018 the project was reproduced in Porto at Galeria do Sol with the support of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Conducted over a month, it invited thirty musicians to recall sonic memories, with a particular focus on those of the cityscape. Through modes of translation and active listening a renewed attention was developed, allowing for an opening into the state of sonic urbanism in Porto. It was possible to access the sonic impact of human infrastructure on both human and non-human life forms, and to locate the critters that are still able to sustain themselves in such environments, not only as impediments but as resilient and active agents of city lives.
