Workroom Conversation: Theo Turpin

Bouquet and Bubble Gum, Theo Turpin, 2020

Theo Turpin is an artist, writer and researcher based in London. He is a doctoral researcher at Loughborough University and his work there explores the idea of viewing artistic practice as an innately narrative project. Through the use of transmedia theory and non-linear narrative structures, such as that of world-building, he propose that a narrative reading of art offers tools to rethink both the means of production and distribution that acts as art’s default position and as a means of foregrounding a plurality of voices.

Practice as World Building. Taking a storied view of what we make with Theo Turpin/5th April 2023/6-8pm

Theo will be talking about his research and thinking around the idea of contemporary art as a form of ‘transmedia storytelling’ in which the various manifestations of an artists’ practice can be seen as multiple storied realisations, in which the practice is understood as an act of world building. He will look at how a ‘storied’ approach to making may be imagined and consider how contemporary artists are utilising these strategies in practice to foreground non-dominant histories and narratives.
